In These Three Days, I Don’t Want to Do Anything
--- When a person cannot be found, you’ll find how wonderful the past life together was
By Sophy Chen
In these three days, I don’t want to do anything
I only want to lie in your heatable brick bed
I don’t want to read English
In the morning
I only want to lie in your heat-able brick bed, and look at you making
Chinese pollen tea, no sugar, a cup by a cup, you drink, I drink
Putting more coal!
Mindless of the nice snowflakes outside the cave dwelling
In these three days,
I don’t want to write poems
I only want to lie in your heat-able brick bed, and look at you cooking, morning,
The sweet millet porridge for me, with a small plate of self-made pickled vegetable,
Noon, buckwheat noodles, night, mutton soup …
Putting coal again!
Mindless of thick snow and strong wind outside the cave dwelling
In these three days,
I don’t want to translate poems
I only want to lie in your heat-able brick bed, and to listen to you tell your love story
Or from time to time, I just boast out
What I have done in English language
Putting more coal again!
Mindless of the heavy snow sealed mountains and blocked the road ahead outside
In these three days,
I really don’t want to do anything
I even don’t want to teach English, open my computer,
Phone calls, and read short massages in Weibo, or Weixin
Just let the heavy snow sealed mountains and cut down anything which can touch me
One thing that I desperately want to do is to wait and look you cooking delicious food for me —
Morning, pollen tea, the millet porridge, noon, buckwheat noodles, night, mutton soup …2015-04-23     10:16   Xiao Gu Wei Island

OPENING NOTE

(www.sophypoetry.com, Sophy Chen translated and published, 2016-01-11, GZ, China)

After I posted my poem, ‘Blood Rain’, on PoemHunter.com, my dear friend Pamela Sinicrope wrote to me saying that we had to think about a future collection of poems on the bloody Paris events of November 13th. From that suggestion the project was born. And I wanted it to become a large collective work: the voice of poets from many different countries, worldwide, who stand up and speak aloud — but without hatred — against the bloody madness of terror.
Astonishingly, 64 Poets from 42 different countries (counting both each poet’s home country and the ones where some of the poets currently live) have joined this project, and I wish to say “thank you” to each of them.
To make this project a tribute to the countless innocent victims, worldwide, we — poets of the world — wish to make our voices resonate in the minds and hearts of all women and men who refuse to be silenced by hate and violence. For this reason, I addressed a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations (of which you can read an excerpt here below), and the other poets sent a similar letter to the Head of State of their respective countries. It is a symbolic gesture, but it highlights our commitment as “Poets against Terror”.
In April, 2016, we will make our collection of poetry freely available, especially to schools, because we believe that education, fairness and justice are the crucial key to help fight and overcome ‘terror ideology’ — not discrimination, as some voices call for. On such a basis we seek a moral support from both national and international organizations, in order to give visibility to our project, because, to quote my friend and co-editor Daniel Brick, “this project is about compassion for the victims of terrorism, it’s a celebration of a simple equation: ‘violence = more violence ; peace = peace’. We’ve made it clear, we’re not debating causes, but mourning a particular ‘effect’ which is the intentional murder of innocents”.
This project would not have come about without the valuable help and support of my poet colleagues and friends Daniel Brick, Pamela Sinicrope and Richard Thézé. To them, my co-editors: "Grazie di Cuore" (my whole-hearted thanks).
Thanks also to Leila Samarrai and Valsa George Nedumthallil, who have helped with the commentaries, and — last but not least — to Galina Italyanskaya, who has created the book cover. However, we need to recognize the role of another invaluable source of help: the Poetry website ‘PoemHunter.com’. I would not have had the capacity, in such a short time, to invite so many poets worldwide to take part in this project without the help of "our site". All of us are indeed active members at PoemHunter.com.
One final thought: I would like, at this point, to remember all the victims of terrorism and their families —those who have suffered and those who have died — everywhere, in the world. Let me say to them, and to ourselves: We shall not forget.

我们所有诗人确实是PoemHunter.com诗歌网站活跃的会员。

Italian Poet, Fabrizio Frosini’s Letter to Mr Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations
for the Global Poetry Anthology ‘POETRY AGAINST TERROR’ e-book
Translated by Sophy Chen

www.sophypoetry.com/, Sophy Chen translated and published, 2016-02-04, GZ, China)
His Excellency Mr Ban Ki-moon
Secretary-General of the United Nations
Office of the Secretary-General
1st ave. and 46th street
New York, NY 10017 USA
Dear Mr Secretary General,
As a world citizen who loves peace and is adamantly against any kind of violence, I wish to inform your office of a project that came about after the brutal murders of so many innocent people in Paris, on November 13th, 2015. The project has been given the title

‘POETRY AGAINST TERROR’
as a tribute to the countless victims of terror, worldwide.
The book, which is an anthology of poetry, is a compilation of poems written by 64 poets from 42 different countries from all over the world. Through the poems, we, the poets, wish to express our unanimous desire for universal peace and to add our voice to those other unequivocal voices at the United Nations who say ‘NO’ to the scourge of terrorism that has horrifically affected so many human beings in so many locations around the globe.
The project, which was, primarily my own response to recent events in Paris, has grown to become the collective response of a large number of world poets, all of whom believe in liberty, equality and fraternity and who are totally against violence —against terror.
I am writing to you on behalf of all the poets involved in the project because we would like our message to reach the greatest number of people across the world as is possible. Particularly regarding the young, it would be wonderful having the book distributed freely to schools so to help people learn a message of peace and reject discrimination and hatred.
It is our fervent hope that your office kindly pass this information on to all the delegates of the United Nations and request their help in passing on the information further to colleagues working in national and international organizations that promote peace, especially those operating in the fields of culture and education.
I am grateful for your assistance,
Yours sincerely,
Fabrizio Frosini

YANG KE Recent Poems ]

《The Chinese People》

The workers who have to beg for wages. 148 pairs of injured hands
waving from the Daqing coal mine.
Li Aiye, who caught AIDS after giving blood.
The shepherd bachelors of the loess slopes.
Gossipy women, mouths slick with spit as they count their cash.
Hair salon girls: unlicensed sex-workers.
Peddlers engaged in a running battle warfare with city authorities.
Old bosses
in need of a sauna.

The 9 to 5 tribe off to work on their bicycles.
Good-for-nothings with no where to go and nothing to do.
The bar-room wasters. Old men
sipping tea as they pet songbirds.
Scholars who fill the heads of their listeners with fog.
Derros, punters, porters stinking to high heaven;
dandies, beggars, doctors, secretaries (and secret mistresses into the bargain);
workplace clowns
and other supporting actors.

From the Avenue of Heavenly Peace to the Guangzhou Dadao
I am yet to see 'the Chinese people' this winter;
I've seen ordinary, speaking bodies
which keep each other warm
on buses day after day.
They're like grimy coins:
those who use them hand them over frowning
to society.

Tr. Simon Patton

《This Is the Latest on Yang Ke》

He eats a pepper steak in a pub
then 'grabs a cab' as they say in this town, then
wanders past stalls piled sky-high with colour.
Here in the South where night never falls
he watches money counterfeit love with strange girls—
His heart is half rotted away already.

Once in awhile from a jumble of ice-cold intelligent words known as poetry
he looks up
like a fly on its pile of rubbish.

《I Came across a Small Rice Field in Dongguan》

Between the toes of factories
short-legged rice plants
clutch at the last bit of dirt

Their root-anchors
uncurl tiredly

Outraged hands wanting to scratch
birdsong and cricket call from the mud

In a patch of gleaming sunlight
I saw rice-plant leaves
shrug like shrugged shoulders

The spikes of rice grew quickly
The grains were in milk They smiled faintly in the summer breeze
talking to me

All of a sudden, emerging from the deafening, impulsive ocean
I wrung myself dry
like a white shirt

Yesterday, I would never have guessed
that in Dongguan
I could have come across a small field of rice
The yellow-green spikes
continued to sway
through moments both happy and sad

《Beijing Wind》

Windy Beijing:
people on bikes
and startled sparrows everywhere

The sticky air is filthy
Trapped in haze, the sun
is like a ruddy moon

Yesterday, only yesterday, we had clear autumn weather

Air-borne paper metaphysical, soaring
Plastic bags glide overhead swollen
so that the form of the wind is visible to me

Leaves rustle in trees
Covered from head to foot in dust, sparrows
fly twittering back to their nests

The ground is covered with Beijing accents

Thou, from whose unseen presence the buses and taxis are driven

Riding my bike, I
am like an arrow
taut against the bow-string

Fired into the Beijing wind
I shoot through the door of my rented house

Two policemen come knocking:
I remember my boyhood,
reaching into a nest beneath a roof

《oil》

1

liquid-rock has been the making of modern civilization
the cold flame inside stone
a zero-degree passion, prolonged black sleep
sustained in time's abyss
two absolutely unmixable elements, fire and water
blend perfectly at the core of things
dark dormant horse
eternity's midnight-blood, a wave that stops breathing
river of light no one can ford
galloping across heaven and earth
from one world to the next

2

death of oil is not the end of life
but a conversion, from hell into heaven
from one form into another
flame is intense prophecy
magnificent dreamlands are born in the brilliance of dying
no flowers are visible in the fire-blooming oil
the twentieth century: bright-blackest of fruits

endless unbroken sound, oil flows in chaos
its cycle of births and deaths is spectacular
infinite unlimited fumes
fill material space—even non-material space is inundated
plastic containers, petroleum jelly, synthetic fibres
oil gushes in all those places oil cannot be sensed
oil: the horse, the fuel, the cloth, the fountain of a new age
golden apples: dark and most glittering of all
today the movement of oil is human movement
and the history it writes is blacker than any ink

3

like ripples in water, the damage is concealed
in a drop of oil, nature comes to the end of her resources
spirit collapsed, oil-wells cannot quench the thirst in human hearts
surging, mobile—oil is impossible to define
in oil's steady gaze
the green of that final moment of consciousness is the most beautiful scene of all
stainless, unsullied moon-light, a clear beauty
irretrievable in the vehicle's rear-view mirror

CROSSING THE YELLOW RIVER

The train was passing the Yellow River
I was in the toilet
I know that pissing wasn’t the right thing
I should have sat at my window
or stood at a door
left hand on my hip
right hand at my brows
gazing out like a Great Man
at least like a poet
having thoughts on the river
on old debts of history
everyone was gazing out
I was in the toilet
taking my time
finally I had time for myself
I had waited one day and one night
in the time it took for my business
the Yellow River had flown far away

CHINA DOWN AT THE BOTTOM

Pigtail is meeting his friend at the tent.
“Bao, do you have cigarettes?”

That box of cigarettes was stolen,
just like the type 64 handgun up on the roof.

Bao sits on the bed in the construction tent.
He broke his leg when they ran with the pistol.

Bao wants to sell it
and go to the hospital to get his leg fixed.

Pigtail is all against that.
“Bao, they will take down your head!”

Bao starts to cry,
crying harder and harder: “Look at the state I’m in!”

“I haven’t eaten at all for two days.
You want my leg to stay broken?”

Now Pigtail starts crying.
He’s wiping his face: “Look at this state we’re in!”

Pigtail decides to sell the gun.
He sells the gun to Mr. Dong.

This was the beginning of a big case:
The 12/1/97 murders* in Xi’an.

On such a night everyone thinks of the murders
I think of Pigtail and of Young Bao.

These hopeless kids from the bottom of China,
this people’s poet can’t get them out of his head.

SEX EDUCATION

One of our travels
We didn’t get out very much –
Nine years ago. Led us to Qingdao -
A summer of love
Sand castles, writing on rocks
Fresh clams in small restaurants
Very cheap. I remember
We lived in a school
A hotel for the summer
It was our summer of
Watching movies together
One night we sat
In the video room
All the way until morning
There was a flick about all kinds of fish
We were attracted
And then we felt
Shaken without compare
There was a fish called salmon
They had this one time
Of uninhibited communion
At the end of their lives
Fish of great beauty
Nine years ago
We don’t remember
How great it was
But no-one forgets
The pain at the end

HAVING MY VISA REFUSED AT THE AMERICAN EMBASSY

all morning till noon
one hundred people in a small room
like smuggled in a container
among boring figures and faces
a beautiful girl studying ballet
brings us all to attention

before my meeting with the official
I have a bit of bad feeling
among the people who get a visa
not one man under 50
only two men
an old guy with his wife
and one so small he doesn’t reach to the counter
America’s scared
they are really afraid
must be scared of our men!
holy shit! visa-official with a big beard
looks like a muslim, much more than me
much more like a terrorist
he doesn’t deliberate
he’s very sure he’s refusing my visa
must have seen something in my eyes
we say big apes cherish each other
he saw some deep hidden blood lust
an intention to immigrate
he’s reading the signs
the great li taibo from the tang dynasty moving to persia
no fucking international jokes please

holding my head up while taking my leave
I see the ballet girl was also refused
at another counter by a black woman
but she’s one happy duckling
flying outside with a song on her lips
“her parents were forcing her to go to america ...”
someone from the crowd knows how it is

THE MOON REFLECTED IN SECOND SPRING

In the summer three years ago
my son and I
used to play soccer
on empty spaces in our block
there was this boy
must have been around ten
always came running to play with us
he was the grandchild
of the bicycle guard in our block
he had a bit of a lisp
that hot summer
belonged to the soccer world championship
we had reckless matches
they sued me two times
then we stopped playing

Three years later
I'm always alone
in the hot sun
walking around our apartment block
avoiding the mobsters
"You you you
why why don't you play football no more?"
from his lisping
I recognize him
he is three years older
now I can see it
he's soft in the head
"Where do you go to school?"
"I I I .... don't go to school."

In the evening
a stifling hot night between our buildings
a jerky tune played on an erhu
You can just recognize
Blind Abing's famous piece
The Moon Reflected in Second Spring
I guess no-one knows
except me
it is that kid not right in the head
downstairs in the garage
taught by his grandpa

SADDAM THE SMOKER

saddam hussain
before they hanged him
asked for a cigarette
fuck! that one smoke
had he drawn it into his mouth
he‘d have been floating in heaven already
one satisfied sigh
at he end of his life
would have been the best cigarette
he ever had
better than each of those
very best quality
cuban cigars
but -
mean little
iraqi warden
stuck to the rules and refused
fuck! what was that for
smokers don’t want very much before death
now he’s past all regret
he had nothing to say
facing his hour

ENTERING AMERICA

I flew from beijing into detroit
and there I walked to immigration
facing two members
of the border police
one checking people
one checking luggage
I didn’t care what they were doing
I came prepared with one magic word
“I am a poet”
(from my successful experience
at the embassy getting a visa)
one policeman was old, one was young
but their expressions
surprised and delighted and even respectful
were exactly the same
over and over they stamped my passport
actually I had some experience before
this is not the first time I’m going abroad
except in my country where I keep quiet
I beat my chest everywhere and exclaim:
“I am a poet!”

VERMONT STUDIO CENTER

joann from chicago
a female writer
could be my age
tells me about
an older writer
john from new york
(the patriarch among us writers)
he gave her a story
a work in progress
asking for her opinion
and the next morning
she raised a few points
she thought the snake
crawling into
a male person’s anus
it was not realistic
john heard her out
but then he ignored her
joann asked me:
“yi sha, please tell me
if this happened in china
what would be the outcome?”
I told her seriously:
“in china we never
show each other our stories
and no writer ever
would let a snake
crawl in somebody’s anus”

IN AMERICA, THINKING OF ZHONG PIN

at vermont studio center
in front of maverick writing studio
a squirrel
shoots up a big maple tree
I think of you
I want to prove
to the world
in our time
there is still one person
who was unhappy
‘cause he did not become a poet
he could not find peace
that person was you
how does that sound
like a winter’s tale
but here in our world
there are no fairy tales
in fact you told me
“I am a hedonist
and would not be content
to become a poor poet …”
so I have to say
you did what you wanted
you followed the masses
went like all the people
so I relax
and the squirrel
jumps from the tall maple tree
to look at me
in his little eyes
I see only joy
no fear at all
it must be you
your soul is in heaven

SONG FROM NEXT DOOR

next door to my studio
a tibetan poet from india
when he was ten
he fled with his parents
writes in english and in tibetan
does not speak chinese
everyday he brings a guitar
actually it’s his own three-stringed instrument
when inspired
he breaks out in song
music goes through the walls
I don’t feel
he is disturbing me
I often prick up my ears
oh, it comes again
he is singing
I feel like I am going to cry
he sings in tibetan
but it is the tune
“nothing is more red then the sun,
no-one is closer than chairman mao…”

DREAM #442

it is winter
I’m in an Internet cafe
to go online

in this Internet bar
there is this old iron stove
from long time ago
with a metal chimney
going outside the house
up on the ledge
you can roast sweet potatoes
that kind of stove

above my head
there’s a gaslight
shining bright
just like the moon

SONG OF VERMONT
(Tang dynasty style)

Green peaks raise blue skies,
clear brooks meet in ponds.
Maples reflected -
is this the real world?
Wang Wei walked here
to his Journey’s End.
Frost stopped in woods,
we have miles to go.
I am just a guest,
with geese flying south.
Red leaves send us off,
snowflakes greeting spring.

GODDAMN LU-PRIZE

the night they announced
the lu xun literature prize
my mobile phone rang
it was the ningxia muslim poet
shan yongzhen. he said:
“only if you are never considered
for the biggest official prize,
you can become
a great poet in china.
tonight my first candidate
would have been chang yao

the second one I thought of
was you, brother yi!”
hearing these words
brother yi stammered
didn’t know what to say
would have liked to hang up
brother shan said:
“so you don’t want to
discuss this topic
in any way?”
I said:

Love Is the World’s Land and Water by Dazang (Translated by Sophy Chen)

From the deep cave, you traced back to the aroma of rotted leaves
You keep the deadwood’s promises, and don’t fall into desolation
You believe the river drying up, but its heart going back to the sea
Nectar from the highest reward of flowers’ love
You witnessed butterflies lighting up wings to light the sky
You witnessed your vicissitudes, magnificence and brightness
When your heart is soft, from the wilderness a grass will go to solemnity and quietness
A ray of moonlight will make the sky very distant
Well, you will pass through the fish’s eyes shining with panic
And swim across the river with its plants waning
You believe the river running wildly and its heart going back to the sea
Love is the world’s land and water even up it’s been dried
When you’ve reaped big, we have to appreciate all things

褪去傲然万物之上的柔媚;

A Maiden’s Last Dream by DaZang (14 lines) (Translated by Sophy Chen)

Your only dream, the most delicate flower bud
In the garden, was firstly picked by a person as a Prince and hurriedly praised
Your tenderness above all proudly faded
In the sunset, you bloom alone

Your eye-catching shine encountered a destined drawing board
It was collected by a pair of eyes in the past life. You’ve fallen in love
With a dream within a dream, the desolate night can only reinforces
Your desire for the painters’ hands, however

Hurt is also here: when the fatal hands slowly move away
And quietly pack up the picture — not that he does not know
He will cover one epic love with dust between time and space

... Until another loving hands weigh broken air in them
You can slowly awake from the death, as if
This isn’t the painters’ hands which will treasure the vanished dream in a lifetime

Translated by Sophy Chen 2016-03-01 Guangzhou, China

The Bird Nest by Dazang (Translated by Sophy Chen)

By climbing the train’s window, she is taking a picture of the scenery outside
The faster the train goes, the more the scenery is swept to the wilderness
What flashed in front of the camera, is that she often can not grasp
For example, as a tall poplar tree by a tall poplar tree is leaping to the windows
It speeds up her heartbeat, but not hit her mind
This appears to be a competitive game by an eye and a hand with the time and the space
Generally, as the bird nest just appears in an illusion in the most distant horizon
She has inadvertently slacked it, to be
A curve flying from the front corner of the window to the back corner of the window
If at this time, just a bird chasing the train
As an angel flying with wind, soared to the skies in dance
She would luckily capture a moment of its tripping dance
Well its more beautiful moment, has disappeared in the endless vast

Translated by Sophy Chen 2016-01-17

The Secondary Rainbow on Birthday by Dazang(14 lines)(Translated by Sophy Chen)

— To the Birthday of Chen & Jiong

Chen, my dear, the sun and flame’s lover in the darkness,
We think of our birthday together in our winter in the first snow
By walking through the dark night I picked the secondary rainbow for you in paradise
I will offer us in our life our happy stars

Happy birthday, Chen, happy birthday
Your tears, as the secondary rainbow in paradise, compose into the splendid soft snow
I, by sunshine and snow blaze, cover your rose sweet body
In the silence of two candles, we will dream, bit by bit, a confined beautiful morning

Chen, at the time the dark night fades in the eternity, we’ll welcome our new life
Poems light as birds, genius and sufferings brushing past us
We are together on horse in the sky as Dante and Badlice
We have passed through the layer upon layer of paradise and man’s world

Chen, my dear, how splendid our birthday in the first snow
In your tender secondary rainbow, I wish to listen to the endless doom sigh of stillness

Note: it was published in “The Special Issue of Poetry” of the Inner Mongolia Writers Newspaper in 1998.

I've never wanted to possess you by Dazang (Translated by Sophy Chen)

—The Elegy of the Lyre No. 6

I've never wanted to possess you, a piece of exquisite artifact
You're only suitable for pouring into my enamored soul
But not for being profaned; in front of you
I just want to be your reach things

Or a sleepy cell hides
In your glory, let me hear for you
And make you forget your overturning pain; if those are not enough
Let me ran to call for you on your weak boundary …

To reject me just likes to reject a medieval myth
It's unforgettable but hard to keep in habitual silence
As the year passing away, the understatement has gradually stopped
In blank of life, none of a figure

Would be close to you — my wandering soul
Inadvertently resides in your romantic themes that yet needs to be filled

被证明只有沉入梦厄的可能;

永不会为你指明爱情游移的踪向;
Love——

Now, You Have to Bury You in the Time Tunnel by Dazang (Translated by Sophy Chen)

In your original dreams,
You occasionally fell in love with your sweet heart
Sleeping in the day and active at night
As a bat it had been proved that
Love is truly to be possible in the dreams
Without your sharp eyes to be polished
In the life traveling, you can not see through its disguised sides
And even heart wounded in thousands of times
In the endless lonely road
Only your fresh poem and hopefulness still exist
And your sadness and passion are in your deep mind

You have been forced to give up a ‘reasonable’ love
However, be given up by an ‘unreasonable’ one
It, a dim night or some wonderful lights, can not tell you
Where the love’s changeable destinations are
Love —
Is a knights’ adventure or endless soul struggle
In your own lab, whatever you are lucky or unlucky
To be felt like a long test, you must face the reality

You, a sensitive poet, had happened to fall in love
But, now, you have to bury you in the time tunnel
Because you had hardly consumed your whole life for love
And your love is always to be extinguished as a strong fire
And now, it is eventually forced to be vanished in the space
